Garden Native and the California Native Plant Society

Garden Native is a major project of the San Diego chapter of the California Native Plant Society (CNPS), the state’s leading resource for information on California native plants. Our 800 local members promote the conservation, appreciation, and use of native plants for the health and well-being of all.

Garden Native comprises a Spring Garden Tour, a Fall Gardening workshop, and a Fall California Native Plant Sale. These complementary activities inspire people to include native plants in their home landscape and give them the practical tools to succeed.

Tickets are sold for the tour and workshop at a nominal charge, thus increasing the number of participants given exposure to all the resources available at these events. The plant sale has no admission fee and is open to the public.

Garden Native Programs

Our Goal: Putting San Diego County at the forefront of change in California
  • Increase awareness of the impacts of common landscaping practices on water use, water quality, and the ecology of built environments
  • Demonstrate landscaping practices that improve water usage and minimize pollutant runoff
  • Inspire people with the beauty, ease of care, and affordability of water-wise native gardens
  • Work with a coalition of public agencies, nonprofits, and businesses to deliver a strong, unified message
Garden Native Tour 2017
  • Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Self-guided tour of 20 gardens, each staffed with knowledgeable volunteer docents
  • This year’s tour (our fifth) will be in South Bay including the communities of Chula Vista, Bonita, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove and the San Diego neighborhoods of South Park and North Park
  • All gardens are water-thrifty and contain 60% or more native plants
  • Gardens commonly feature permeable surfaces, rainwater collection, or wildlife habitat.
  • Tour gardeners use little or no fertilizers and pesticides, thus exercising true source control of storm water pollutants
  • Tour attendance has grown 20% every year since its inception in 2012 (675 last year)
  • Visitor surveys indicate a high rate of behavioral change, converting conventional gardens and implementing other water-saving measures
Garden Native Workshop
  • Provides a full day of lectures and demonstrations
  • Focuses on practical issues of design, installation, and maintenance of native plant gardens
  • Held in early fall so attendees can learn, plan, and be ready to plant in time for the rainy season and before the rainy season is over
  • Attendance increased 25% from first to second year. There have been three so far and we are planning one for Fall 2017.
  • Visitor surveys indicate motivation to save water and have environmentally beneficial gardens
  • Qualifies as continuing education for California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) and UC Master Gardeners
